S I L A S ®
A acoustic data acquisition and processing software for mapping of sediment/silt layer
characteristics and subseabed structures.
Silas can be used for:
Determination of the nautical depth
in ports and waterways (density, viscosity).
Determination of (polluted) siltlayers.
Environmental surveys.
Sandsearch projects.
Pipeline / cable route surveys.
Wreck / amunition detection.
The Silas advantage:
Silas works with any echosounder.
Silas works also with a boomer, sparker,
and subbottom profiler.
Silas is easy to use.
Silas can communicate with any professional
survey package: Hypack, Quinsy, PDS or other.
Silas can import and proces exact density
data from the DensiTune silt density probe.
Automatic layer tracing functions.
Ultimate fast data processing, interpretation, stocking, filtering, deconvolution,
etc.
Support for: Odom, Kongsberg Simrad,
Marimatech, Reson Navisound, Atlas, Knudsen,
and many other echosouders !

Introduction:
SILAS software has been developed for users of acoustic systems who want more detail from
their acoustic measurements. Our users are hydrographic surveyors, geologists, port
authorities, governmental organisations and scientific institutes. Dredging- ,
Hydrographic companies and Port Authorities use Silas to obtain more information about
water depth, silt layers and subbottom characteristics. Besides sediment quantity/layers,
also the sediment type and sediment characteristics can be established, as well as
information on possible obstacles in the bottom. Geologists use Silas in combination with
profilers, boomers or sparkers, to obtain detailed information for subbottom sediment
classification.
Software:
The SILAS® software package consists of:
A. Data-Acquisition Module:
Calibration of source signal;
Conversion of analogue source signal to digital;
Conversion of reflected analogue signal to digital; all raw
reflection data are recorded on harddisk;
During data acquisition no basic data processing is executed;
On-line link with navigation system for synchronisation and
position control;
On-line data acquisition control; vertical data density can be
determined by user by setting the sampling rate;
Control of the number of samples per shot, the number of
samples can be adjusted without interruption of data
acquisition;
Adjustment of recorded depth interval; modifications of
settings are recorded in shotheader;
On-line monitoring of reflected signal intensity;
On-line monitoring of incoming data quality;
On-line tracing of acoustic interfaces in records;
B. Data Processing Module:
Removal of noise by filtering;
Correction of data for intensity variations;
Correction of signal strength for energy losses;
Shot and shotpoint coördinates are mixed in off-line
processing mode;
Automatic tracing of reflections in records;
Calculation of in-situ density using reflection intensities
and in-situ density measurement data;
Export of data to DTM, CAD, Asci, SEG Y, XTF
